Head of the Genesee

OARS SQUARED AND BURIED: The McQuaid Jesuit Crew Team Blog

This weekend the McQuaid Crew Team raced at the Head of the Genesee. The weather was quintessentially fall rowing- cold, rainy and windy! The team showed up with great energy, despite the weather. Parents also put in exceptional effort at the hospitality tent with plenty of hot food, coffee, and hot cocoa. We were certainly grateful to be racing out of our own boathouse so that there was ample shelter and propane heaters!

We had a great day and were happy to be able to catch up with friends from Mercy who were also at their boathouse on the western shore of the river with us and Brighton.

Regatta Racing Results

The team raced in a Varsity 8+, a Varsity 4+ and a Novice 8+ at the Head of the Genesee. The Varsity 4+ was the first to compete and they clocked in 23:39.463 for a 10th place finish.

The Novice 8+ hit the water next and they were VERY excited for their first regatta! Just look at those smiles! They rowed a 3K and placed 4th with a time of 9:58.829. Great job, fellas!

The Varsity 8+ team leaves the dock with stern four paddling downstream

The Varsity 8+ competed last on Saturday and by then the weather had really gotten gnarly. This was the maiden regatta for their new Vespoli shell, the "Therese Lynch, M.D." which was named in a ceremony the day before where, thankfully, the weather was much more favorable. The boys persisted, in spite of the driving rain and headwind, and came in at 19:37.474 for a 4th place finish.

Catch Us Next in Philly!

The team has been working hard this season and was glad to be able to get to race against other teams this weekend. They are looking forward to the next race day, which will be in Philadelphia, PA at the Head of the Schuylkill. If you're up for a road trip to see some top caliber collegiate crews compete on Saturday followed by the scholastic teams on Sunday, we hope to see you there. If you're an alumni who might be living in the Philly area, please stop by our hospitality tent to catch up, reminisce, cheer and enjoy some fellowship with the athletes and parents over a delicious hot lunch! You can find details about the Head of the Schuylkill on their website.
